Massing Model

This site model is created to show to context of the proposed design with the surrounding buildings. The massing model was created at a scale of 1:500. The site model show the urban context of the site.

The site for proposed design, Site 3 of Project 3, Newtown

A massing model developed to show the building relation with the adjacent buildings and the area around the site.

The building roof of the massing model shown how the building receives natural light. The building's level change was shown where half of the building structure was elevated as to create another level that is intended to create private space.

Facade development showing how the facade moves with the level change, which creates an interesting facade. An intrusion of space was to create a manoeuvrable entrance that could also aid in consumerism.

Project 3 - Gallery - Artist Selection

Artist chosen : Jeff Koons

Jeff Koons is a pop artist which mainly uses famous figures such as balloon figured animals and strong coloured materials. The art projects created have large scales and states a strong symbolism to the surrounding context. Koons used bright colours to emphasize the lightness of the artwork while the material used was actually heavy, such as aluminium. Other than sculptures, Koons did paintings that also uses the same technique which uses bright colours with strong angular lines.

The artwork that interest me the most of his is the BMW art car, which is also his most recent project. Jeff Koons designed the 17th art car of the BMW art car project for BMW company. The car's body design shows the power of explosiveness of the races that the car will take part in. From the design, I developed my main concept in relation to the idea of explosiveness and speed which is shown by projection of lineworks in a range of angles.

The video below shows the process of the art car project. It shows Koons design process towards creating the interesting paint job of the car. He explains of his inspirations are from the velocity of movement and explosiveness.

Double Spiral Cone structure

Coop Himmelb(l)au adopted a new technique in creating architecture, which is seen in the BMW world, the spiral cone. The double spiral cone structure space serves as a walkway and an exhibition area. It serves as one of the main natural light source for the building. The main activity space in the spiral was further emphasised with the usage of a spiral ramp that connects people to the second level of the exhibition space. The glazing used around the whole structure enhances manipulation of daylight exposure.

Spiral ramp

The spiral ramp enhances the circulation in the interior of the building. As the products sold in the building is large scaled items, the ramp that was needed for the transfer of the item is fairly large. Other than transfer items, the ramp also serves as movement area for users into the upper level.

Section

The section shows the steel turning structure of the double spiral where it is then connected to the roof of the building structure. The support structure of the roof was further enhanced with the presence of a strong supportive structure (the double spiral cone) at one end. This section also shows the presence of a large basement area which is for the storage as cars takes up a wide area. The building uses crossed steel structures as the main support of the building room.

Roof layout

The roof layout shows an interesting manipulation of material and small openings that enhances the manipulation of natural light. Large openings on the roof emphasizes the main entrances. The layout of the roof was related to the spaces in the interior of the building.

Precedent Study 2:

Lois & Richard Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art

Zaha Hadid

Cincinnati, Ohio, United States of America

Urban carpet

Zaha Hadid considered the urban carpet as one of the most important issues in designing the art center. As the building's facade takes a very distinctive style, the circulation flow could only be manipulated through the usage of movement devices in the interior such as ramps.

Blending to the Urban Fabric

At the lowest level of the main floor, the floor was structured to blend the building into the urban context where the curved upwards flooring follows the level change of the ground fabric. This also helps to focus people to the higher level of the building structure.

Natural Light

The main circulation area was the ramps situated at one end of the art center. The area was the main area to manipulate sunlight with the usage of wide openings from the roof the focuses light onto all the ramps present. The ramps are lit up through the process where it then encourages users to move to the higher level as the building has 6 consecutive levels. The openings at the stairs also allow light to move into the main exhibition spaces while it is blended into soft light that doesn't disrupt the nature of the artwork in the exhibition spaces.

Conceptual development

Through the precedents, my design will include:

Controlling sunlight through openings in roof
Usage of the connection to the adjacent buildings
Facade very expressive to maximise people to come into the building
Using metal framing to develop the facade fittings.

Project 3 - Gallery - Site Analysis

The site I chosen is site 3. The site is situated at Newtown and the site has a frontage that faces the main road that connects Newtown to the main CBD area. The site recieves sunlight at the west side. The sunlight can only be manipulated through the side of the building or the roof of the design as the facade doesn't recieve much sunlight. The long span frontage of the site allows me to manipulate the facade to sets of connection between 2 consecutive buildings.

The rear access however is very narrow, hence the rear access cannot be used as one part of the main circulation. It could only be used as processive routes for items delivery.

The adjacent buildings has a obvious height difference where one of it is around 7.5m high and another of 10m height. This allows me to use the height difference efficiently while adding a new level and also manipulating maximum sunlight for the building. The main road shows the importance of a interesting facade to attract consumers into the building.

"The Geographer"

17th Century Dutch Paintings

This painting consist of a geographer looking out of his room's window while in his process of studying a map. In the painting, the geographers view was slightly elevated, showing that he wanted to look out while he was working on his work. The main aspect that I explored for this painting is the richness of Asian art influenced materials present inside. The geographer is believed to have venture oriental island as according to his possessions such as the kimono, which is a Japanese traditional clothing worn by himself in the painting, and the big piece of fabric with decorative patterns from China. Organic lines were very obvious as of the patterns present in the fabric. The 2 different items show his obsession with Asian culture materials after his exploration towards the Asia continent. The globe at the top left corner of the painting further explains the geographer's journey where it was turned towards the Indian Ocean, which is the main route in the 17th century for Dutch to venture towards India and China for export and import purposes. Hence, I decided to explore this aspect to further develop my concept towards the design of the building to be designed for the geographer in this painting.

Structural diagram (Plan) - Showing different structural materials had to be used as to support different parts of the building, as such the thicker lines to show load bearing walls to support the second level of the building.

Circulation diagram (Plan) - Showing the areas for public circulation and private circulation. The main circulation goes through the courtyard. Private circulation goes through a pathway that leads to the main entrance or to the first of the building.

The house was designed for Dr. Bartholomeuz but was then cancelled near completion. Then the house was converted to an architectural office for Geoffrey Bawa, which is also the architect of this building. The house was designed based on Ena de Silva House, which has the main idea of narrower and longer design. Few courtyards were present in this building that seperate buildings of different purposes. The first courtyard seperates the servants room and the garage from the main parts of the building.

As seen in Image 2, the main courtyard which is in the middle of the main buildings, leads to the main pavilion of the house. This courtyard was a pool court (shown in Image 3), that serves as also the main movement area, that people have to pass through and hence to reach the main building. The courtyards and verandahs cools down the building's temperature and air conditioning were even obviated in a country with hot climate. Polished coconut tree trunks were used as columns for the building's support. These columns were polished and base on a granite base as to avoid termite attacks.

"Mangalore" tiles were used as the tiles for the roof of the building which helps in controlling the temperature of the building. This house is also the forst tile on cement roof house. The tiles required minimal insulation and also lightweight. The combination of waterproof cement and good insulation tiles provide the house with the most suitable roof structure. The effort of conversion of the house to an office was so little that not much modification had to be done. Office spaces acquired considerable amount of sunlight where its the essential requirement for a architectural office, which is shown in Image 4. Since 1997, the unused office was converted into a gallery and shops.

In my opinion, the house's design was largely based on the idea of Chinese courtyards which focuses people to move along or to the courtyard spaces that serves as the main meeting area in a building. The building has the idea of tropical architecture where it uses the greenery as a part of the context of the building where it surrounds the building as for the context of this building. Controlling the temperature and ventilation throughout the building was further enhanced with the presence of courtyards and trees around the building.

Atlas of colour

Colour theme: Blue

Concept of atlas: Water takes up 70% of earth surface, hence, using the earth to lead people through the atlas and unfolding as contour. Simple layout used based on the precedent study, Herzog de Meuron's Natural History. Usage of colour at different tones gives me a great control towards the depth of objects.

This picture shows the presence of lighting qualities in the architectural aspect. The distance of the building was highlighted with the usage of lighting throughout the picture where a darker sequence was used to show the further distance of the building. The aspect of repetition was shown through the building's structure where the picture captures the similar shapes in the building. The black and white effect was shown through the presence of light intensity throughout the buildings. Perspective view of the pictures further enforces the building's structural aspect and gives the viewer the idea of the spand and also the feature of the further building structures.

Obama Space

The architecture that symbolises the orb of the statue of liberty, symbolism of power and control. Obama's concept was of military power and control which was then highlighted s the structure grows taller as a symbolism of powerfulness. The control was shown through the presence of different levels of the building from low to high with bigger surface to smaller showing dominance of the leader.

The Meeting Space

Usage of the covering layers around the architecture to highlight that both clients were supported by the people to have great powers. Open space were also to highlight the wide range of powers that both clients carries.

Usage of custom texture to form movement throughout the surface.

Prada's office space

Presence of elegant and simple shapes shows the traits of Prada's design. Power of Prada's design were formed through the usage of elegant fashion design for the people. Hence, the presence of lot of "branches" shows the presence of Prada in creating a feminine and powerful fashion industry.

Obama's office.

This is to show the overall shape of the Obama office as it was inspired by the statue of liberty where the building forms an orb where different layering of tubes were used to focus the elevators at different movements but all was controlled and in the end focused at Obama's office at the top. The power of Obama was formed by the presence of democratic purpose, hence the layering of glass surrounding the building is to show the protection and support by people.

I had focused on using sketchup for making the overall shape of the building. This caused a very big problem for me as the importing of the surfaces were always having problems even though i had done a lot of tries of changing shapes and overlaying or even intersecting.. it just wont work..

Obama's decision to enter politics turn out to be yet another piece of great timing in a remarkable agenda in an era of overblow political statements. And like every other brainy move from this best of all possible, Mr. Obama quickly reshaped policy on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that began provocative relationship of reforming national security. Given Obama's conscientiousness and ambition, the overall goal of shifting the military's focus were navigated as boldly with his presidency, then becomes an international aware issue. With presence of authority, Obama's power to rebuild national security were successfully achieved with the newly constituted and democratized nation. This image is the one that inspired me to use the technique of using shadows as a part of creating the design of the structure in my design. The usage of the shadows in different angles represents different lighting and structural effects that gives the structure a stronger and more cubic nature where as the usage of penumbra, blur of the shadows, near a bit more lit area gives the texture around less heavy nature. Different placement of structure espacially in the interior of the structure reflects the shadows in different angles that highlights the height and position of floating objects in the air around the interior structure. The usage of dimmed blue light for the Cousteau's laboratory gives the structure a in water effect that incorporates with the shadow of the structures around.

This is a video showing the upper level sections where it cuts throught the whole surface then the interior spaces were shown where the stairs, studio space and also the gallery space were shown.

This is a vide showing the sections of the under ground level which is the studio space for Rosalie Gascoigne. The sections go through the stairs and the overall shape of the underground level is shown.

This video shows the movement from the lower level through the stairs into the gallery space then moving on the the upper level where the other studio is present by the stairs connecting to the upper level.

This video shows the battle of airships in the game final fantasy 12 which inspires me to design my design of the building which have quite a similar shape to the building. The structure of the airships have the structure of massive buildings and which also have the criteria of the words I chosen which is sharp and complex.

Fiona Hall:

Holdfast (Macrocystis angustifolia/ giant kelp) 2007

The material of the design were aluminium and tin where both materials come from sardine cans and discarded materials. Halls normally uses ordinary objects and materials where only conventional production techniques were needed. The interest of hers in botanical classfication can be one of the most influential inspiration in this design.

The material of the design was from road signs where they have a reflective naturem hence the effects of reflection were achieved. Road signs were broken down and aligned in different positions and orders. The design where then exhibited on wood at the dimension of 75cm x 60cm.

The model was created express the presence of a focal

point where sharp edged forms bring the eye around the

swirl motion into the middle of the elevated form. The model

was purely abstract where it doesn't represents any function.

This model encouraged me to use certain aspects such as

scale and space to achieve different effects in an imaginary

space.

The Millau Viaduct, which is the tallest bridge in the world

which reached 343 meters and has the length of approximately

2.4kilometres. The massive structure insprires me where

a sense of wanting to be a part of creating such an enourmous

structure forms because it shows me the wide area of architectural

possibilities and showing me how humans stretch their limits

of creating something nearly impossible.

The Lamborghini Gallardo, a masterpiece in design. This

shows the abilities of humans using science and creativity

to achieve excellence as such using aerodynamics to defy

physics to achieve absurd speed. This inspires me that

architectural works can achieve their best functionality

through the usage of physics knowledge and improving

the practicality of a certain structure.
